10 Homeschooled Children of Joe and Nicole Naugler Once Again Under Parental Custody

By R.L. Stollar, HA Community Coordinator

After 2 months, the 10 homeschooled children of Joe and Nicole Naugler have been placed back in their parents’ custody.

The children were placed in state care at the beginning of May after allegations of unsafe living conditions and truancy surfaced. The children remained under government protection after both a May 11 hearing and a June 3 hearing did not find it was safe for the children to return. The May 11 hearing came with a dramatic turn of events when 19-year-old Alex Brow, Joe Naugler’s oldest son who lives out of state, showed up at the courtroom and alleged he was physically and sexually abused by his father.

Joe and Nicole Naugler and several of their friends created two fundraisers that raised almost $70,000 to improve living conditions as well as boost Nicole’s dog grooming business.

A local Kentucky news source, WDRB, broke the news today concerning the return of the children:

The couple’s lawyer confirms, the Nauglers now have “physical custody of their children”

However, both parents are still facing criminal charges.

Joseph Naugler faces charges for allegedly threatening a neighbor. Nicole Naugler is charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, following a confrontation with police when the children were removed from their home.

  • There is a significant difference between physical custody and legal custody under the law. CHFS can and often does retain legal custody of children while the parents work the plan. That would mean that decisions regarding the children are made by the Cabinet and the parents implement said decisions. I do not know what the situation is in this case, however, their attorney’s choice of words is telling.

  • They have physical custody but haven’t regained legal custody. The child support costs to the parents for 10 kids must have been staggering and the goal is reuniting the family, anyway.

I hope all goes well and in time they regain legal custody. I’m not in a hurry to see that happen, nor do I want it to stretch out indefinitely.

  • Their Facebook page is now down and a new one is up but there is not much there. Either they were told to take it down or the comments made them make it down.

  • Something must have gone terribly wrong in 2013. The woman (Nichole) who was discussing her delight in having an oven in December of 2012 sounds completely different from the woman who was adamant about how wonderful things are in 2014. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:z58XM3QhLmwJ:blessedlittlehomestead.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html+&cd=9&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

I hope their lives are less tumultuous now and in the future.

  • The Nauglers have had 7 months to get it together since their children were removed from their custody. $70,000 of a GFM and business loan later, they are living in an uninsulated shed less than 500 s.f. for 13 people, and only marginally better off than before. Still no running water or septic or rain collection system that she has ever described. They had two years of failed gardens, and don’t appear to be homesteading at all. They’ve got some free-range goats and chickens, but no farm operation.
A recent fundraiser for her new baby was outed and discovered to also be for insulation for her business. Things don’t look good. But hey, they have 2 donated solar panels, so they’ve got enough juice to be online all day long while the kids are out building a brick patio or chopping wood.

Here’s a new blog that isn’t drinking their Kool Aid. http://www.blessedlittleblog.com/bang-bang/
